One of the things Charles and I have been wanting to do around the house is to add more modern technology-friendly features. For instance we’ve recently been researching a new alarm system that you can control from your phone, that might be less expensive, etc. (Let me know if you have any suggestions on this!)
Another we’ve been wanting to do is to remove the 1990s intercom system we have throughout the house because it just SO dates the look of everything. GRRR. Anyone else have this?? Drives me crazy!
When Legrand got in touch with me about updating our light switches and outlets with their adorne collection, I was ALL IN. And I knew Charles wouldn’t mind installing it because, hello, they are so cool!
If you aren’t familiar with adorne, you have to watch this quick little video below to see all the features the that would take me forever to sum up into words. The bottom line is that outlets and light switches have come a LONG way y’all. Who knew?
Want a USB outlet directly in the wall? Yep they can do that. Want a light switch you can just wave your hand in front of to turn on? Easy schmeasy!
Here is a sneak peek of how we’ve installed the “wave” light feature in William’s room:
You just wave your hand in front of the sensor to turn the overhead light off/on when you enter or leave the room. Very handy since obviously my hands are already full holding him!
William’s “roommate” Gerald (the giraffe, LOL) LOVES how high tech he feels guarding the doorway. ;)
How cool is this? Luckily Charles is pretty handy and it did not take him long to install. Although I must admit I have no idea what is involved in the install, but these are the only tools he needed.
If you want to tackle this project, here’s my thoughts on how to get it done.
- Look at the procedure for how to install everything here and make sure you have the right tools.
- I’d start with one room. Pick a room that could really use some updating & that has special needs. For instance, we wanted to add a nightlight to one switch plate in our kitchen so we could easily see it for those early morning fumbles to the keurig. #NeedCoffeee. We also wanted to add several USB ports in living room and kitchen so we could plug in our phones.
- Pick a Device. Pick a plate. Combine and enjoy! If you want to make it easier, use the Room Planner so you can name the room, and also print out the inventory checklist so you can easily see what needs to be replaced.

One more tip: When you’re planning out how many types of switches you need, make sure to really think about where you use everything in everyday life. For instance, I’m always sitting at the kitchen counter working (instead of my office, whoops) so we knew we wanted USB outlets there to accompany those outlets so I could plug in my phone. It takes a little bit of time to go through each and every outlet & switch and think about how you use it, (or if you rarely use it at all! then you need this – no baby-proofing necessary!), but it makes a big difference.
