Golden Globes 2012 Hits and Misses

I always change my votes once I look at how the dresses photograph. (Don't you?)

Last night, my favorite was Charlize Theron. I'm not 100% crazy about how it photographs though.

LOOKED BETTER ON TV THAN IN PHOTOS, but still loved,

AWARD :)

I still love it, but it's almost like the slit and neckline
are too much going on in the photo. In person, amazing.

BEST DRESSED OVERALL

(Head to toe, Hair, Makeup, Everything!)

I usually have one person that I totally change my mind
about and Emma Stone was it! Last night I wasn't crazy
about her look. Today looking at photos = obsessed.
Hair and Makeup = PERFECTION.

She can do no wrong. Gorgeous!

Va va voom! Perfection!! Arms are so toned!
Dress hugs curves perfectly! A+++!

It is just so Heidi. Kinda love.

A lot of people didn't love this look.
We've seen better from MW but I like it. She still just
looks so pretty.

A lot of people were also on the fence about
Kate Winslet, but I like it! I love her curves, I think
she is glam glam glam!! And she looked comfortable,
which always earns points over teetering, about to fall,
can't breathe, sucking in...

So sorry to say this: I love the dress I just
think it would have worked better on a younger
actress. I know, I feel bad saying that! She looks great
but it's a little too edgy for NK.

This dress needed someone that was va-va-voom.
I LOVE Marchesa, but it just doesn't work here for me!
Her hair needs to be down! Also something more
fun and age appropriate would have been nice. Although
I do give her props for trying some a little different
than her normal over the top glam style.

Things I Learned from Golden Globes:
1. I need to see "My Week with Marilyn" ASAP!
2. I can't believe I read "The Help" but never saw the movie!! NEED to see asap!
3. Kate Beckinsale never ages.
4. Big dif between a nice glow (Alba), and a cheap, Real Housewife looking glow, (won't name names).

That's a wrap on this year's Golden Globes!

For instance a few months ago I really wanted a feather dress, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. After searching high and low, I bought some awesome feathers & attached them onto a dress I hadn't worn in years. I took off the lace arms, added the feathers, and bam! A brand new dress! It was exactly what I wanted, and I got my creative juices flowing too, which is totally necessary!

DIY: Statement Necklace {Recycled!}

As I mentioned in my last DIY, I sometimes like to give broken jewelry new life. You can use beads off of a previous piece or buy new beads if you prefer! In this case I just didn't want to part with my wooden bracelet.

What you need: Pretty Ribbon, Wire, Beads or anything you can thread on your wire

Instructions: Thread your beads onto the wire, make a loop at each end, and the tie the ribbon on both ends.

Or you could buy ones of these fab pieces I've been lusting over!! lol :)

Here are my picks for the new Versace for H&M line, which hits store Nov. 19!!!

Ok so spill the beans, what's your plan of action? Are you going to wait in line to score some limited "Very Best of Versace?"

If you had to only pick one thing, what would it be? I'm kinda dying over the fur vest. And leggings. And red dress. And leather studded dress....

I think the key to wearing Versace is only wearing ONE piece at a time. And if you're rocking the leather jacket you gotta throw in some ruffles to soften it up a bit!

Tonight is the big fashion show in NY officially kicking off the excitement for the line!!

DIY: Fab Necklaces

I am huge believer in the power of a chunky necklace spicing up any outfit.

Since I am always on the search for a new chunky necklace, I decided to use some of my fave vintage pieces to make a brand new necklace... that is much chunkier. :)

Here's What You Need: Felt, Glue, Pretty Ribbon, Jewels

Instructions: Step 1: Cut your felt into the shape you want. Step 2: Glue on your jewels. 3. Add ribbon.

So easy right? This idea is also great for broken jewelry you aren't ready to part with yet.

Recently I've become obsessed with the tweed jacket. It is nothing new, the tweed jacket has been around a while. (Thank you Coco Chanel.)

However, I love the idea of styling it with a little edge. Enter Exhibit A.

Work That Skirt

I've had a few inquiring minds ask how to style a long skirt in the colder temps. We'll, I've narrowed down my 3 favorite maxi skirt looks and here they are!!!

1/2/3/4/5/6

Outfit #1 - The Chunky Sweater. This look was seen alll over the runways and is the most comfty cozy winter uniform evs.

Outfit #2 - The Tuxedo Jacket. Ok fine I stole this idea from Olivia Palermo {see below}. Sue me. The Tibi tuxedo jacket is just a fresh take on the ole blazer in my opinion, and it makes the look a little dressier.

Outfit #3 - The Fur Vest. I dare you to try a fur vest with a maxi skirt and tell me you don't love it. Cozy, warm, fun. Added bonus: fur always makes everything a little more glamourous in my opinion.

My Fave Fall Trends - Part 1

There are so many fabulous fall trends, I can't possibly cover them all in one post, but here are some I'm dying over lately!!!

1. Loafers

Let's be honest, the only person I know who prefers to run errands in 5 inch stilettos on a daily basis is Victoria Beckham. Ya gotta have something fashionable and comfty for daily use, and although I'm still obsessed with boots, this is a fresh change. {And shhh... I'm kinda over ballet flats.} I just got these babies today and can already tell I'll be living in them. Here's another pair I love from J. Crew!

2. Grama Tweed Jacket, Styled with an edge.

Yeah, I want to channel my inner grama. You probably got that already when I said I liked loafers. Anyway, I think this look can be so Chanel and fabulous. Obvs, don't style it like grama would ... I like the way this one is styled below.

3. Big Ole honkin Necklaces

Big ole honkin is the technical term. When I say necklaces I mean, collars, bibs, fringe neckpieces... essentially anything that is huge that you can wear around your neck. :) Here's a fun pearl collar I found at asos.com

Fashion's Night Out 2011 Recap

Oh Fashion's Night Out, how you never cease to surprise me.

This year I started the night at DKNY, where they were handing out popcorn and beer, and awesome Bill Cunningham pins, which I adored! I ended up seeing Bill twice on my trip outside of Lincoln Center!

Then I headed over to Bergdorfs, where the fabulous definition of chic, Linda Fargo, greeted the crowd in one of the famous Bergdorf windows! (She. Was. Wearing. Red. Fur!! And it looked.. amazing!)

She was joined by Michael Kors to celebrate his 30th design anniversary and the crowd went wild. (Side note: He told the funniest story about a sweater he bought about oh, 30 years ago, that was $500, which was "2 months rent" at the time. He went out that night, feeling so hot in his new sweater, and then the doormen wouldn't let him into a club because he wasn't wearing a sport coat. He said he had to borrow a scruffy one from a friend and that was one of his big fashion memories. It was much funnier hearing the story from him, but you get the idea.)

Next I stopped at the Bergdorfs dog fashion show, with so many designers and fashionable people walking in it! I saw Bag Snob's Tina Craig, the designers of Marchesa, and even Monique Lhuillier!

Then I met up with the fabulous Emily Loftiss at Michael Kors' actual store a few blocks down!! Love her!!! PS Kors was there too! You're quick Kors!!

Next up we dashed into Saks, where the scene was just fun and crazy on every floor! We did the step and repeat on the shoe floor, because how can you resist these!

Then we headed all the way down to the meatpacking district, which was packed with crazy FNO goers. Gotta love it!

We ended our night at Abe & Arthur's where we saw Tyson Beckford, Russell Simmons, Michael Strayhan, and either Kylie Jenner or a Kylie Jenner lookalike! lol :)

Pick of The Day- Semi Comfortable Heels (that aren't granny)

As I'm sitting here plotting what to wear to Fashion's Night Out, and basically all over New York for Fashion Week, I can't help but think about my poor feet. They are going to hate me, as usual, for trotting around in heels for days!!!

So with that in mind, here are a couple of shoes that look serious business, but I've heard are super comfortable.

These I've tried on but haven't bought yet. They made my legs look fab! And were comfty, but aren't they always comfty in the store?

These I haven't tried on yet but I've hear several people say they are so comfty. They are more of a splurge!

Ok friends, tell me which heels are your most comfortable!! I need to find a new fave pair Asap!!!

Beauty Necessities. (They're FREE!)

Yay!! Free!

This time of year, all I want to do is make fall wish lists.... (ahem... previous entries)... so sometimes it's nice to remind ourselves of the things we can do, that make us look FAB for absolutely FREE!!!

These are some of my favorite tips I've read or thought of over the years.

I'm making this list as much for you guys as for me.

1. Wear BIG, DARK, sunglasses.

Because a) they keep you from constantly squinting outside, which only encourages crows feet. And b) they cover more of your face which is good if you for and added layer of sun protection! :)

2. Relax your face.

It's like free botox. Think about the things you do all day long. a) stare at computer screen, making your concentrated face. b) drive/ sit in traffic doing your furrowed brow (look in your mirror ya'll! That brow is furrowed!) - try to always relax that face! Those are the areas where lines are gonna start forming people!!

3. Don't use a straw.

Unless you're drinking a dark liquid because then you'll stain your teeth. (But I don't recommend drinking dark stuff, see #5.) Using a straw promotes those lines around your mouth!

Demi knows a thing or 2 about a fresh face.

4. Stand up straight.

I am the worst hunch back evs so again, I'm preaching to myself here. :) But seriously, you look more confident AND skinnier. Did I mention skinnier??

5. Drink WATER!

Yep, I troll around on Sephora's website all the time for that cream that's going to make my skin look like ya know, AHHHmmaaazing. Once I buy, usually I am disappointed. If only I would drink more water, I could get that natural glow. For free. I had a model friend once who would drink gallons of water for 2 weeks prior to a big photo shoot. It worked. GLOW.

All of that being said, I'll confess: some days I'm all about the Heidi Klum mantra of, "if you don't have any wrinkles, you're not laughing enough.." And then some days I see a friend that I haven't seen in a while, and they look OLD and I think oh em geee!!!! I need to start working on preventing this aging thing!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like, not only are you getting a fabulous designer item at a fraction of the price, there is a little bit of a thrill of actually scoring whatever it is you want because there is such a high demand and they always sell out!

Since there are so many fabulous designer collabs coming up I decided to end My Favorite Things Week with a bang by breaking down their dates and information so you can prepare!!

My Favorite Things Week Day 2 - Rent The Runway!!!

RUN, do not walk, to set up your account for RENT THE RUNWAY.

If you are friends with me IRL (In Real Life ya'll!), you probably already know my ~~obsession~~ deep appreciation of this amazing service.

You might already have an idea of what RTR is but let me break it down for you.

Hint: They've thought of everything ok? These are smart girls, they went to Harvard Business School, and then started Rent The Runway. Furreallll.

1. Pick a dress.

2. Dress arrives at your doorstep.

3. Wear dress.

4. Send dress back in pre-packaged envelope.

That was so hard! (There is no font for sarcasm.)

It is SO easy people!

"But what if I spill wine on it? What if it doesn't fit? Ahhh! Stress!"

First of all, calm down. Have some champagne or something. Life isn't that hard. They send you whatever backup size you want for free, and there is a $5 insurance fee on all your dresses so you're covered if you become the recipient of some misplaced wine or chocolate cake.

These girls are literally gonna march into your closet and take over. For real. (Not really.)

My TOP 5 Events to RTR:

#5 - A Black Tie Event. Don't buy an expensive dress to wear once. Rent a reeeally expensive dress for a fraction of the cost, and wear it once. :)

#4 - Weddings. You're gonna be in a million pictures and they're going to be all over facebook. It's just a fact. Wear something new and fancy!

#3 - GNO. Girl's Night Out ya'll. You need em every now and then.

#2 - New Year's Eve. No reason to BUY crazy sparkle dress - just RENT it! That is the only night you'll need it for! Unless you plan on wearing the same dress every NYE.

#1 - Your Birthday. Rent a dress that retails at $2,000 and feel like a million bucks!!

The bottom line is: if you have a social life and events to go to, and if you are planning on wearing clothes to these events, you need RTR.

In fact, you could go to the website and schedule every dress you need for weddings, events, parties... everything for the rest of the year. Done. No last minute stressing. The day of your event arrives and normally you are worried about picking up dry cleaning or figuring out which dress you haven't already worn around this group. Or worse, making a quick trip to the closest boutique to buy something that you only kind of like. But if you RTR, your dress shows up at your house, perfectly steamed and ready to wear.

I'm all about making life easier and this is just one of the ways I've found that helps me out. Recently I used RTR for Fashion Week, and my birthday, and I both experiences were absolutely perfect and stress free.

Hey, I like to buy pretty dresses too. But sometimes you just don't want to have the commitment of buying. It's kind of like guilt free shopping. :)

My Favorite Things Week Day 1- Birchbox!!!

I ran across this fabulous new service called Birchbox!

I saw it on my friend Emily's blog, and I had to immediately sign up!!

Basically for $10 a month, you get a box full of fabulous beauty samples, based on your skin/hair type and preferences.

Friday I got my very first Birchbox and all weekend I've been trying out the samples to give you guys a detailed review!!

Item Information breakdown and review:

1. LIFTLAB Lift & Fix High Potency Solution - You can just tell this is an expensive product as soon as you put it on. This ain't the free hotel moisturizer folks. I'm going to use the whole sample bottle and see what the longer term results are.

2. Befine Exfoliating Cleanser - loved this! Better than the drugstore exfoliator I normally use. Left my skin very smooth.

3. Befine Night Cream - This, paired with the exfoliating cleanser, made my skin so smooth. Seriously thinking about purchasing these products.

4. Blinc Mascara - this is the new mascara that forms tubes around your lashes. I wasn't a fan, but I think I just need some practice applying it. I'm going to try it again.

5. Kate Spade Twirl perfume - I wore this all weekend, and loved it!!

6. Not in above photo, Twistband Hair Tie - finally a hair band that doesn't crease your hair after you take it out. Love this! Definitely buying more of these.

What I paid for all samples + shipping= $10

Yep, I'm sold on this service!! I'd say $10 a month is a small price to pay to try out tons of amazing products, and have them delivered straight to my door.

So many times I think, "hmm I should try a new perfume," or "I really need a new night cream" but how often do you go around to beauty stores just trying things out? Besides, it's kind of hard to try things like, skin cleanser or night cream in a store.

Fashion Marketing + Why we buy what we buy

When I'm at the gym, I read year old fashion mags while on the treadmill. Sue me, it's the only thing they have and it's better than just staring at how many calories I've burned.

Recently I came across this (year old) cute spread with brightly colored shoes, purses and accessories.

"Wow..." I think, "maybe I could pull all that color off.. Yes I could totally pull it off, I'd pair those bright shoes with a neutral outfit."

Lady gaga is blasting in my headphones...

"That would be so hot! Love it!!"

And just as I'm about to turn the page...

"Wait... those shoes actually look so familiar..."

Then I remembered. They were the same YSL heels I had shuddered at a few days before. They had been lumped on the bottom shelf of the big shoe sale section at Bergdorfs.

They were fashion roadkill.

No one wanted them and they were deeply discounted.

Wow, so a clever photographer and stylist had convinced me for a second that those shoes were so hot.

I know it's not a breakthrough or anything, as we all know that today's HOTTEST items are lining next season's bargain bin. But I felt a little silly after seeing it happen to me so clearly.

THEN..... this happened!!!

I'm shopping online and see these flats and declare them the perfect fall flat!!

Neutral, comfortable leather, versatile = perfect fall flat, right?

Then, yesterday I see them, where else, on the bargain isle at an outlet store.

They just didn't seem so fabulous anymore. And I didn't end up buying them.

Wow, I am totally who the fashion marketing people market to.

It got me thinking about all the reasons why it's so easy to see something online or in a pretty spread and think it's so fabulous!

Online, there is an entire page of information, all for that one special item! Anything you want to know, it will tell you. Sometimes there's even a video letting you see it on a model! There are these happy reviewers saying it is their favorite item in their closet! Of course we buy things online!

Are you aware of it when you like something more because of the marketing? Do you still like the things you buy next season?

I actually still like and appreciate clever marketing because I think it lets you see the different ways you can wear something and challenges you to try something new. I also understand that trends come and go and that's just part of what makes the fashion industry go round. :)

I challenge you to go read a year old fashion mag and tell me what you think of all the declarations of "THIS IS THE NEW HOT ITEM!"

This one is Lauren by Ralph Lauren. Kinda equestrian prep? You could pair this one with really cute equestrian looking boots.

**** BEST DEAL!! I just realized I already mentioned this cape a few posts ago! Apparently I really like this one! Also I just realized it is only 60 bucks! And has a hood! So Cute!!

This one is cute but I'm having a hard time thinking of what to pair it with.... it's very military trend.

This one is so chic! I love this one!!! I'd pair this with black leggings and a tall skinnier black boot with a bright bag. :)

Shoe Designer Obsesh - Charlotte Olympia

Charlotte started her line in 2007, but I just started noticing Olivia Palermo wearing them last year and of course my interest was peaked. Once these fall shoes hit my inbox I've been officially stalking them. And adding them to my fall wish list.
